Dental Implant Surgery
Computer guided implant surgery or computer-aided implant surgery refers to the process where the dental implant placement surgery is performed digitally utilizing a 3D model of the patient’s jaw prior to performing the actual surgery. The 3D model of the jaw is constructed from a CT scan of the patient. This software allows the implant dentist to control the direction, depth, angulation and size of the dental implant on the computer (virtual surgery) and to duplicate the same thing precisely in the mouth during the actual surgery.
Why is this so important? The ability to perform a digital dental implant surgery before the actual surgery in the mouth is revolutionary. It allows the surgeon to accurately avoid nerve spaces, sinuses and other vital structures, which helps place the dental implant in the most ideal position and avoid any possible surgical complication.
