Types of Dental Implants

What are immediate implants?

Immediate dental implants are a dental implant that are placed on the same day of tooth removal. Traditional or conventional dental implants are placed after 4-6 months of tooth removal. Immediate dental implants are becoming more prevalent. The immediate integration of modern dental implants into the jawbone has increased the success of immediate implants.

The biggest advantage of immediate dental implants is the preservation of bone and tissue. Waiting 4-6 months after tooth removal before placing a dental implant may cause up to 25% of bone loss. Placement of a dental implant immediately after tooth removal can prevent bone loss.

What are mini-implants or mini-dental implants?

Mini dental implants are smaller in diameter “usually 2-3mm” than the smallest conventional dental implant and they are pointy at the end much more like a regular screw where conventional implants are flat or rounded at the end. The fact that they are pointy at the end, allows for immediate fixation and stability of the mini-implant into the jaw bone.

Mini dental implants have become popular choice for immediate stabilization of dentures. However the biggest disadvantage of mini-implants is breakage of the implant body due to the small diameter. Mini-implants are weaker than conventional implants. We believe that mini-dental implants are most useful to restore small tiny spaces between teeth where regular dental implants would be too large for such spaces. Mini-dental implants are also commonly utilized to stabilize dentures. Mini-implants are offered by implant dentist Dr. Mo Saleh at Dental Dynamics, located in Portland, Oregon (Pearl District).

Types of Dental Implants

There are several types of dental implants based on connections material used to manufacture the dental implant:

1- Internal “Hex” connection dental implants: an internal hex dental implant is where the abutment is connected into the inner core of the implant

2- External “Hex” connection dental implants: an external hex dental implant is where the abutment is connected to the outer surface of the implant

3- One piece dental implant: a dental implant where the abutment milled into the implant all in one piece without a connection. There is limited and specific cases where these types of implants are used

Both internal and external hex dental implants offer various restorative options and successful final outcome. However the majority of dental implants utilized today are internal hex implants.

Both Internal hex and external hex dental implants come in various sizes “3-8mm” diameter and various lengths “8-16mm”.
